Farmington football has had a great run over the past five years. The Tigers have acclimated themselves into their new school and their incredible stadium. That was the spot Friday night as we continued our Kickoff Weekend 10 coverage. The opponent was the Raiders of Hudson who had played a game last week and fell to Wisconsin Rapids 35-6. They played solid on both sides of the ball and rolled out of Farmington with a 30-13 win.

’It was ups and downs and a huge momentum game,’ said Hudson head coach Adam Kowles. ’It wasn’t perfect by any means, but our guys bounced back. They took some counter punches and bounced back.’

It was the defense of the Raiders that stymied the offensive ground game of the Tigers. As a matter of fact, Hudson held Farmington to -25 yards rushing.

The game began beautifully for the road team as they scored on their first two possessions. After driving inside the ten yard line and having a first and goal opportunity, they were pushed back and settled for a 35 yard field goal. They cashed in the six point variety on their second drive when junior quarterback Luke Miller connected with Joe Kelly for a 38 yard touchdown.

Farmington got on the scoreboard just before halftime. The score was set up with a beautiful pass from Darren Beenken to Dayne Eich for a huge gain that set up the Tigers first and goal at the two yard line. Two plays later, Beenken scored on the quarterback sneak and the Tigers were in business trailing 13-7 heading into the locker room.

The Raiders took the opening kickoff and were on an impressive drive when they fumbled an option pitch. Farmington’s Tyler Grubb scooped up the fumble and rambled 79 yards. With the touchdown, the Tigers took the lead and momentum.

The would keep that momentum on the defensive side of the ball. The Tigers forced the Raiders into a three and out. In a game that is filled with ebs and flows, the Raiders defense stepped up and forced the Tigers into fourth and 29 by the time the drive was done.

They used that momentum to take over the game and never relinquish the lead. They scored 20 straight points en route to the win.

Both teams turned the ball over one time, but Hudson held the time of possession advantage 29:01 to 18:59.

The Tigers (0-1) open conference play against Red Wing next week.
