Washburn High School brought its 49-0 conference record into Thursday night’s opening game, and they pushed that mark to 50-0 without their star running back ’ Montrell Wade.
Wade was accidentally shot in the head last February when someone was playing with a gun in a south Minneapolis home. The teenager has been recovering steadily since the accident, and is adjusting to his new role on the sidelines.
’He still has is vibrant smile, his personality,’ Washburn coach Giovan Jenkins said. ’He loves to joke around far as I'm concerned, the fact he can't walk is the only thing prohibiting Montrell from being Montrell.’
While Montrell Wade can’t run the football anymore, he’s still able to impact the team with his leadership abilities and personality.
’He inspires me a lot the way he keeps fighting,’ freshman Jeff Jones, Wade’s successor at running back, said.
This season, Montrell Wade is still on the Washburn roster and listed as a captain. He says he’s still fighting to get back on his feet, with a goal of walking by graduation.
