ORONO, Minn - When a new coach takes the reins of a program, there are always many feelings that work through players and parents minds. Maybe most importantly the feeling of excitement and energy a new face brings to the table. This will be the case in Orono this winter as Ellen Wiese takes over the successful Spartan girls program.

Wiese had worked as the head JV coach at Maple Grove and has enjoyed a successful run as a head coach in the popular and successful MN Metro Stars AAU program.

“My vision for the Orono program is to continue the winning tradition within an environment where the girls are pushed to reach their potential and conduct themselves in a way that the community and their families will be proud of,” said Wiese.

The Spartans return a solid core group from a team that finished 20-8 before losing to eventual state champion Benilde-St. Margaret’s in the section semi-finals last year.

“I am most excited by the opportunity to work with a motivated, talented and fun group of girls at Orono,” claimed Wiese when asked about what she looked forward to most about the opportunity. “I want to make this group the best it can be and see where that can take us.”

Coach Wiese knows that to build a successful program, excitement needs to come from the youth levels as well. She will work with the younger girls in her two camps this summer.

As to the future of a program that is well supported by the community, the sky is the limit.

“I feel very optimistic about the coming year,” said Wiese. “Benilde-St. Margaret’s, as the current state 3A champion, will be the team to beat. As they are in our section we will have to beat them to get to the state tournament.”
