EDINA, Minn—The #2 ranked Edina Hornet girls hockey team was clicking on all cylinders Tuesday night as they opened their season with a suffocating 9-0 shutout win over the Academy of Holy Angels Stars. Sami Reber notched a hat trick and added two assists for a five point night. Six players collected two points or more to pace the Hornets in a well balanced attack.

Megan Armstrong opened the scoring at 6:41 of the first period on the power play as she fired a shot from the point through a screen that caught Start goalie Clara Westall by surprise. The puck snuck through the glove side for the 1-0 lead. The two teams exchanged rushes and opportunities for the next seven minutes, yet it was Edina that closed out the period with a flurry.

Three goals in 2:51 seconds gave the Hornets a 4-0 lead and they were off and running. Christie Brauer scored from Reber at 13:38 as the Hornets executed a rare four on one break. As Reber took a loose puck from her own blue line, she raced up the ice. The Stars were caught flat footed and it was Reber who took it wide. As her support on the weak side, it was Brauer who triled to the high slot. Reber stayed patiend and fed Brauer the puck for the one time wrister and the 2-0 lead.

In the final minute of the period, Reber waited out Westall as she found an opening and fired it in the back of the net at 16:13 for the 4-0 lead. Emily Bruns fired another puck home at 16:29 for the 4-0 lead. Mackenzie Rauch set up the goal and Edina outshot Holy Angels 13-3 for the period.

It was more of the same in the second period as the Hornets again brought a barrage of shots and again goals. Hannah Burns scored from Kelly McGarvey at 5:27 of the second period. It was Reber again this time from Greer Vogl, Reber went back to back five minutes later on an unassisted tally. It was the highlight reel goal of the night as she went inside out on a one on one up the middle, left the defender in the dust and waltzed in on Westall and deposited the puck for the 7-0 lead. Liza Nessan went up by a score of 8-0 at 14:31 of the second period.

Freshman Sarah Neilson capped off the scoring for the Hornets on a neat backhander giving the Hornets the 9-0 lead and eventual win. Edina (1-0-0) faces off with Chaska at Braemar Arena on Saturday while the Stars (0-1-0) take on #5 Warroad and #6 Roseau late in the week.
