ST. PAUL, Minn—The Roseville Raiders were considered the top team in the state of Minnesota for the majority of the 2009-2010 season. They completed the journey Saturday night with an impressive 4-0 victory over Edina.
The Raiders jumped out of the gates quick and scored on the power play just 2:23 into the contest when Kayla Capistrant put the puck past Edina goaltender Caitie Morris. Capitstrant wasn’t done. A minute later she tallied for a second time this time even strength at 3:48 for the quick 2-0 lead. With their heads spinning, the Hornets attempted to generate some offense and had a brief 5 on 3 power play, but could not capitalize on the opportunity. The Raiders tallied again in the first when Ahna Logan beat Morris for the goal and the 3-0 lead.
“Our goal was to come out hard and to stay out of the box,” said Edina coach Laura Slominski. “We came out hard, but didn’t stay out of the box.”
The Hornets were penalized eight times which didn’t allow the squad the ability to pick up any momentum.
The Raiders picked up their fourth goal in the third period when Hanna Brodt tallied for the final 4-0 score.
The Raiders overall speed to the puck was the biggest separator between themselves and the rest of the field.
For the Raiders, it is their third state championship, but the first since 1999.
“The feeling of actually getting to the end of the state championship game is unreal,” said defenseman Allie Duellman. “Since we tied to Minnetonka in late December, we decided we wanted to go undefeated the rest of the season. We worked as a team to get that goal.”
The Raiders finish the season 27-2-1 with their only losses to Stillwater and Mounds View.
